Lorient derives its name from that of a boat

The city is not that old. It was founded in 1666 as a base for the French East India Company. King Louis XIV created the company to facilitate trade with Asia. It was established in Port-Louis, where the first ship was constructed: “Le Soleil d’Orient”. Lorient is named in tribute to this boat.
