    Clermont-Ferrand: A Gruyère city

    Like everyone in the whole Auvergne region, the residents of Clermont-Ferrand are real cheese fiends. Many wine cellars are hidden beneath the city. With approximately 527 cellars in 77 streets, Clermont-Ferrand is the city with the third largest number of wine cellars in France. Extending over four levels, they are scattered throughout the city, from Place de la Victoire to Place de Jaude.

    Capital of France for one day

    On 29 June 1940, Clermont-Ferrand was named the French capital. A few days after the armistice, Marshal Pétain made it the capital because of its location and railway network.

    Clermont-Ferrand: The birthplace of a delicious treat

    Clermont is also known for inventing fruit paste. This sweet treat made from cooked fruit dates back to 1837 and the Sucrerie de Bourdon. It appears that fruit pastes were created by the Duc de Morny, half-brother of Napoleon III. They are now known as “pâtes d’Auvergne” (Auvergne pastes).

    Stroll around Place de Jaude

    As well as being famous, Place de Jaude is the largest square in Clermont-Ferrand. It is flanked by the “Les Galeries de Jaude” department store and the Église Saint-Pierre-des-Minimes church. The statue of the Gallic king Vercingetorix also stands on the square. The surrounding boutiques and restaurants invite you to shop before relaxing on a terrace.
